Entries are now open for the three major cider competitions which will be staged as part of the Orchards and Cider exposition at the Royal Bath and West Show, May 29 to June 1:

  • The British Cider Championships, Britain’s largest and most prestigious cider competition, open to all cider-makers, large and small;
  • The Bath and West International Cider Competition, which attracts entries from cider-makers around the world;
  • The Bath and West Cider Newcomers awards, aimed at the many new micro-producers (less than 2,500 litres per annum ) which are such a feature of the current cider scene.

Last year’s British Cider Championships attracted over 500 entries, making it the biggest cider competition in Europe. The Bath and West International Cider Championships, in just its second year,  drew over 100 ciders and perries from as far afield as Tasmania and Canada, whilst 42 Newcomers competed for the Vigo Presses award, of which four were given a gold award.

The 2018 Champion British Cider was a single variety Dabinett bottled cider produced by Harry’s Cider of Long Sutton in Somerset, with a naturally sweet sparkling cider produced by the Halfpenny Green Cider Company of Bobbington near Stourbridge in the West Midlands as runner-up.

‘”To win the Supreme Champion at the British Cider Championships is to reach the pinnacle of cider awards”, says Harry Fry, who started his family business some 15 years ago.

“This award has given us a huge amount of pride in what we have achieved so far, and boosted sales right across our range of ciders. There is no doubt that being involved in this competition has lifted our brand profile to a different level, not just locally, but across the country”.

The British Cider Championships include classes for all styles of genuine apple-based ciders, and perry pear- based perries, from the most traditional farmhouse cider through to specialist keeved ciders (made in much the same way as champagne) and the new generation of craft ciders, sometimes in cans, as well as bottles.

Endorsed  by the National Association of Cider Makers, the British Cider Championships aims to shine a spotlight on the very best of British cider and, in so doing, raise standards across the industry even higher.
